Description
St. Michael the Archangel is one of the great angelic figures of Scripture. His name traditionally carries the meaning “Who is like God?” In the Book of Revelation, Michael leads the heavenly angels in battle against the dragon, making him one of Christianity’s most enduring images of God’s triumph over evil.
Your icon follows the Eastern Christian tradition particularly strongly. Michael is depicted as a heavenly warrior with wings, a staff or spear, and sacred symbols. Rather than portraying brute physical strength, traditional images of Michael present his authority as something received from God.
The inscription identifies the figure as Archangel Michael, and the rich gold, red, and blue palette is characteristic of Eastern iconographic imagery.
Devotional themes: protection, spiritual warfare, courage, justice, fidelity to God, defense against evil.
