Description
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is one of the most recognizable devotional images in Catholic Christianity. Rather than representing Christ’s heart merely as an anatomical object, the Sacred Heart symbolizes the whole person of Christ and, especially, his divine and human love for humanity. Catholic teaching describes the heart as a privileged symbol of Christ’s boundless love. Vatican Press
In this image Christ displays the Sacred Heart upon his chest. The heart is encircled by the crown of thorns and surmounted by the Cross and flame, recalling both Christ’s Passion and the love that lies at the heart of his sacrifice. His wounded hand recalls the Crucifixion, while his extended hand gives the image an inviting quality.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart has deep roots in Christian reflection on Christ’s wounded side and developed into one of the Catholic Church’s most widespread devotions. Vatican Press
Devotional themes: Christ’s love, mercy, sacrifice, reparation, trust, forgiveness and devotion to Jesus
